办学特色自80年起,该校就开始对一些智力较好的小年龄学生进行超常教育实验。“超常教育实验班”以教育上的高水平、高质量赢得了广泛的社会声誉。至今已为高校输送众多少年大学生,年龄最小的学生冯滔只有13岁,有3名为全国29个省市先后报考中国科技大学和东南大学等少年班学生的状元;另有一批人跳级或正常录取入全国重点大学。年龄最小的张滔考入北京大学时只有14岁。在该校学习期间,超常教育实验班学生有9人次在全国高中物理、数学等竞赛中获一、二、三等奖。在这些学生中有8人获国内外博士学位,另有一批人正在攻读博士学位的进程中。仍在中科大等少年班学习的有15人。
超常教育的科研成果在全国处于领先水平,且先后被江苏省教委教科所正式批准确认为省级"九五"、"十五"规划立项研究课题。学校有关研究成果先后三次在参加中科大召开的全国部分省重点中学超常教育研讨大会上宣读、交流,先后三次参加了世界超常教育工作会议。2001年9月,全国中学超常教育研究协作组第九届年会在该校成功举办。
该校连续十次参加由人大附中、北京八中、天津耀华中学、东北育才中学、江苏省天一中学等十多所全国著名重点中学组成的"全国超常儿童教育协作工作研究组"年会,并每次在年会上宣读论文。中科院心理所对该校少年智力开发作了直接指导,中国科技大学派员作天一中学"超常教育课题组"常年顾问,中国人才研究会超常人才专业委员会正式吸收天一中学作为其团体会员,并吸收"课题组"的6名教师为个人会员。该校又是全国15所重点中学校长组长的"青年英才中学阶段培养措施研究"这一国家级课题成员之一。
